Be The Match® was selected by the U.S. government to operate the nation’s Cord Blood Coordinating Center as mandated by the Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act of 2005 (Stem Cell Act 2005) and amended by the Stem Cell Therapeutic Reauthorization Act of 2010 (Stem Cell Act of 2010). We work with public cord blood banks, doctors and researchers to continually improve cord blood transplantation and educate medical professionals and the public.
You Could Be The Cure. Every year, more than 12,000 patients in the U.S. are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases such as leukemia or lymphoma for which a marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant from an unrelated donor may be their best or only hope of a cure. About 70 percent of patients in need of a transplant do not have a matching donor in their family. They depend on the Be The Match Registry to find an unrelated donor or umbilical cord blood unit. Only 1 out of every 540 registered donors will actually be chosen as a match and be asked to donate. Matches are found with those of the same ethnic backgrounds, so Hawaii residents have great potential in helping not only patients from Hawaii, but from all over the world. There are many myths about donating bone marrow. Please go to our FAQ page and Testimonials to learn more about the facts about being a bone marrow donor. You may be the ONLY one to save a person’s life!
The primary mission of the Parent's Guide to Cord Blood is to educate parents with accurate and balanced information about cord blood medical therapies and cord blood storage options. This web site explains the motivations for banking umbilical cord blood, and the difference between donating cord blood to a public bank versus paying privately for family storage. The second mission of the Parent's Guide to Cord Blood is to analyze new developments in medical research or public policy which could expand the use of cord blood.
SAVE THE CORD FOUNDATION, a 501c3 non-profit organization, was established to promote awareness of the life-saving benefits of cord blood based on unbiased and factual information. The Foundation educates the #NextGeneration, parents, health professionals and the general public about the need to preserve this valuable medical resource while providing information on both public cord blood donation programs and family cord blood banks worldwide.
